چکیده

Background and Purpose: It is widely accepted that south-European peninsulas were major refugial areas from where European beech, Fagus sylvatica L., spread to the rest of Europe in the Holocene. The aim of this paper is to review and evaluate all the available data and present different types of evidence, some of them new or overlooked until now, to support the hypothesis on the existence of glacial refugia of European beech further to the north, in the south-eastern Alps and north-western Dinaric Alps in the Pleistocene, and on rapid development of these populations in the Holocene. Material and Methods: Numerous published pollen diagrams and palynological research as well as reports of macroscopic plant remains, mainly charcoal from Paleolithic sites, were analyzed to examine the presence of European beech in the late Pleistocene and Holocene. Data on genetic variation of beech populations from central and southeastern Europe were analyzed to investigate their genetic structure and differentiation. Additionally, the distribution of several taxonomically rather isolated herbaceous species, characteristic for mesophilous beech communities from the studied area,

Hitchhiking with forests: population genetics of the epiphytic lichen Lobaria pulmonaria in primeval and managed forests in southeastern Europe

Availability of suitable trees is a primary determinant of range contractions and expansions of epiphytic species. However, switches between carrier tree species may blur co-phylogeographic patterns. We identified glacial refugia in southeastern Europe for the tree-colonizing lichen Lobaria pulmonaria, studied the importance of primeval forest reserves for the conservation of genetically divers...

Sattleria revisited: unexpected cryptic diversity on the Balkan Peninsula and in the south-eastern Alps (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

The taxonomy of Sattleria Povolný from the high mountain systems on the Balkan Peninsula and the adjacent parts of the Alps (south-eastern Alps, Dinaric Alps, Rila Mountains) is revised based on recently collected material and re-examined museum vouchers. Adult morphology and molecular data of the COI barcode region support the existence of six strictly allopatric species in this area, includin...

Spatial and altitudinal bioclimatic zones of the Italian peninsula identified from a beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) tree-ring network

A network of 24 beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) tree-ring chronologies has been developed for the Italian peninsula. Principal component and cluster analyses were used to identify geographical and altitudinal patterns of tree growth. Correlations and response functions were then applied to the main modes of tree-ring variability to uncover climatic signals. In a landscape occupied by humans for mill...

Phenols in Leaves and Bark of Fagus sylvatica as Determinants of Insect Occurrences

Beech forests play an important role in temperate and north Mediterranean ecosystems in Greece since they occupy infertile montane soils. In the last glacial maximum, Fagus sylvatica (beech) was confined to Southern Europe where it was dominant and in the last thousand years has expanded its range to dominate central Europe. We sampled four different beech forest types. We found 298 insect spec...

Extra-Mediterranean glacial refugia in a Mediterranean faunal element: the phylogeography of the chalk-hill blue Polyommatus coridon (Lepidoptera, Lycaenidae)

Most warm-adapted Central European species are thought to have survived ice ages exclusively in Mediterranean refugia. During recent years, this point of view has been questioned. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that extra-Mediterranean refugia also played a role in warm-adapted insect species and selected the chalk-hill blue, Polyommatus coridon. We sequenced two mitochondrial loci (COI, C...
